When it is used
After the hearing, once you know which part you need. A separate form is needed for each case (EX107 guidance notes).
Before you start
- The case number, the court and the judge's name.
- The date of the hearing and the approximate start and end times of the part you need.
- Any order that the transcript is paid for at public expense, or that the cost is shared.

What happens after you send it
The court checks the request, including any permission needed, and sends it with the recording to the transcription company, which contacts you about the cost and delivers the transcript. A judge may need to approve a judgment transcript before it is released.
Common mistakes
- Ordering without permission when you were not a party to the hearing.
- Giving times that are too vague for the company to find the part you need.
- Choosing the fastest band without checking the price.
Common questions
Can I get a transcript free?
For an appeal, the court can certify that one official transcript is paid at public expense if you cannot afford it. Form EX105 is that request (PD30A paras 5.33 and 5.34).
Which company should I choose?
In civil and family cases any of the authorised companies can be used. The guidance notes list their prices.
